THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE HELICOPTER PICTURES. I LANDED IN A RIVER BED JUST BEYOND THE NORTH BOUNDRY OF DENALI PARK, SET THE CAMERA DOWN ON THE ROCKS AND LET IT TAKE A SHOT.
MT MCKINLEY WITH SOME STRANGE LENTICULAR CLOUDS. WE COULDN'T FLY LOWER THAN 9000' THIS DAY WITHOUT GETTING THE STUFFING BEAT OUT OF US. THE WINDS WERE ABSOLUTELY HOWLING.

THIS PICTURE IS OF DENALI ON A BLUE BIRD DAY. YOUR LOOKING AT THE EAST FACE STILL MORE THAN 40 MILES AWAY.
I HAD A BUNCH OF GEOLOGIST OUT ON THE NORTH SIDE OF DENALI THIS DAY AT A PLACE CALLED CASTLE ROCK LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO PUT A SEISMOMETER. WE FOUND A NICE SPOT AMONGST THE ROCKS AND BEAR BERRY. FROM HERE THERE WAS A 360 DEGREE VIEW FOR NEARLY A HUNDRED MILES IN EVERY DIRECTION. WHAT A GREAT PLACE FOR A LUNCH BREAK!!!

THIS POOR GUY WAS FLYING ALONG AFTER A MOOSE HUNT AND HIS PLANE CAUGHT FIRE, HE DIDN'T HAVE A WAY TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. HE WAS TRYING TO REACH BEHIND HIM AND STOMP IT OUT WITH HIS HAND, BUT WAS UNABLE TO REACH. THE PLANE WAS BURNING FAST ENOUGH THAT IT WAS GOING TO FALL OUT OF THE SKY SOON SO HE CRASH LANDED HIS PLANE ALONG THE SIDE OF THE YANERT RIVER BED IN THE BRUSH, HE JUMPED OUT GRABBED HIS DOG WHICH WAS IN THE BACK SEAT. THE PLANE CONTINUED TO BURN DESTROYING EVERYTHING INSIDE TO INCLUDE HIS GUN, MEAT, MONEY, AND ALL OF HIS SURVIVAL GEAR. HE WAS LUCKY THOUGH BECAUSE THERE JUST HAPPENED TO BE ANOTHER PLANE SEVERAL MILES AWAY BUT IN THE SAME VALEY WHO SAW THE SMOKE AND CAME TO INVESTIGATE. THE DRIVER OF THE STILL FLYING PLANE CALLED US AND I WENT OUT AND PICKED UP HE AND HIS DOG. AS YOU CAN SEE THERE'S NOT MUCH LEFT OF HIS PLANE.
THIS IS MY SWIMMING HOLE I HAVE GONE TO IN THE PAST. WHEN I TAKE OUT THE HELI-TREKKERS I HAVE TIME TO GO CRUZING AROUND FOR A BIT, I HAVE A COUPLE OF HOURS TO WAIT BEFORE I HAVE TO GO PICK UP THE HIKERS. THIS IS ONE OF MANY PLACES I HAVE WAITED FOR THEM. THE WATER AS YOU CAN SEE IS A BEAUTIFUL COLOR.

HERE IS A LINK TO THE VOLCANO WATCH http://www.avo.alaska.edu/activity/Augustine.php
HERE IS WHERE I WAS TODAY. FLYING IN THE COOK INLET, ALASKA. THERE ARE 13 OIL RIGS AND 2 ON SHORE FACILITIES WE FLY TO. THE FIRST PICTURE IS OF THE VIEW FROM OUR HELIPAD. THIS IS OF THE SUNRISE AT ABOUT 09:30 LOOKING AT MT. SPUR ON THE RIGHT AND MT. REDOUGHT ON THE LEFT,BOTH ACTIVE VOLCANO'S. NEITHER LOOK VERY BIG IN THE PICTURES, BUT THE CLOSER YOU GET THE BIGGER THEY ARE,AND WE ARE A LOOOOOONG WAY AWAY. THE SECOND IS OF MOUNT ILIAMNA AND THE SUNSET. THE NEXT MOUNTAIN DOWN TO THE SOUTH WHICH YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE IS CALLED MOUNT AUGUSTINE. MOUNT AUGUSTINE IS ALSO AN ACTIVE VOLCANO THAT IS ABOUT READY TO BLOW HER TOP. DAVE, ANGIE, JESSIE, AND LEVI LIVE JUST ACROSS THE INLET FROM THERE, THEY MAY BE DUSTY SOON. THE LAST TWO ARE OF SOME OF THE RIGS WE VISITED TODAY.

A SMALL LAKE ON TOP OF THE YANERT GLACIER CAUSED BUY THE MELTWATER. THESE SMALL LAKES ARE A BEAUTIFUL COLOR. THE WATER IS NOT BLUE IT'S CLEAR, THE COLOR COMES FROM COMPRESSED ICE. AS ALL OF THE ATMOSPHERE IS COMPRESSED OUT OF THE ICE, THE ICE ABSORBES EVERY COLOR IN THE SPECTRUM EXCEPT FOR THE WAVELENGTH OF BLUE. IT'S ACTUALLY THE LACK OF NITROGEN WHICH CAUSES THE WAVELENGTH OF BLUE TO BE REFLECTED BACK OUT.
